As of today, there are approximately 400 million cases of hepatitis B or C in the world. It is estimated to be ten times more contagious than HIV. It is too high a figure that could be reduced if we learn to take care of our health and ultimately prevent diseases such as this.
According to the World Hepatitis Alliance, every year 1.4 million people die of hepatitis. If we help create awareness of the most common routes of transmission, we could save 4,000 lives every day. Here’s a quick list from the World Hepatitis Alliance site:
1) Blood transfusions or blood products with unscreened blood
2) Major or minor surgeries where equipment has not been properly sterilized – medical or dental.
3) Mother to child during birth (most common in hepatitis B, less common in hepatitis C)
4) Needle stick injuries in healthcare centers
5) Sharing syringes, notes or straws for injecting or snorting drugs
6) Sharing razors or toothbrushes
7) Getting tattoos or piercings with unsterilized equipment
The best way to prevent hepatitis B is to avoid having unprotected sex, getting tested and vaccinated, if you think you are at risk of contracting it. Please note, hepatitis tests are specific and must be requested separately – they are NOT part of your yearly routine checkups.
As for hepatitis C, there is still no vaccine hence the recommendation to be very careful with the previously mentioned routes of transmission.
