What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Wash your face, brush your teeth, look in the mirror? Often times we don’t like what we see and begin pinpointing our imperfections. What if every day we found new lesions or red marks on our skin? Sounds stressful right?
Those are the kind of mornings for more than 10.6 million people living with Psoriasis in Mexico and the U.S. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by genes that predispose an individual to this condition when combined with one or more of the following factors.
Which factors can activate Psoriasis?
- Stress
- Diet and alcohol consumption
- Skin lesions: burns, scrapes, cuts.
- Medication: some antiinflammatory medicine, medicine for the heart and some antidepressants.
- Infection: any infection that damages the immune system, especially the streptococcus.
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, there are several treatment options to control this condition. Some of them are systemic treatments, topical medications, oral, herbal medicine, supplements or dietary changes, such as glutenfree meals.
There are also natural remedies that can help minimize the symptoms. Some consist of applying aloe vera on the affected areas to reduce the itching and dryness. Sunbathing in moderation, swimming in the ocean, letting the wounds be exposed to fresh air, drinking lots of water and avoiding a highfat diet can improve the day to day discomforts.
